What is the procedure to change the date of birth in an Indian passport?

While you apply for a passport, you need to submit a valid date of birth proof such as a birth certificate. Based on the document submitted, the passport is issued. However, there can be a possibility that while issuing the passport, the passport authority may make an error in printing the date of birth on the passport. Another possibility could be, the date of birth details provided by you could be incorrect.


If such a thing happens, you can contact the passport issuing authority or passport officer and request for rectifying the wrong date of birth in the passport. They will issue a new passport with the corrected date of birth. If the mistake happens from passport authority, they will issue a new passport without any fee. But, if the mistake takes place from you, you will have to pay a correction fee of INR 500 to change the date of birth on the passport.

The change of date of birth on Indian passport can be done under the following circumstances:

If you request a change of date of birth in passport within a period of 5 years from the date of issue of the passport. If a minor is holding the passport having the wrong date of birth, then he/she can apply for the correction of date of birth in the passport after attaining the age of majority(18 years). In such scenarios, the 5 years clause does not apply.

The process of change in date of birth in the passport in India is fairly simple. You need to specify your correct date of birth in the application form and furnish proof of date of birth.

The documents which serve as a valid proof of date of birth are:

Birth Certificate issued by a municipal authority or the office of the Registrar of Births and Deaths or other designated authority. In the case of applicants born on or after 26th January 1989, it is mandatory to furnish this proof. An affidavit from Magistrate or Notary confirming the date of birth in case of the illiterate or semi-illiterate applicant.

Note that the School Certificate specifying the date of birth is not a valid documentary proof.
